Summer Developments in Dundee (Part 2)

[Ed's note: Continuing the mini-series on Dundee developments, here's more from Jeff.]

The leisure and flatted development under construction at the junction of Hawkhill and Session Street involves the demolition of an existing restaurant (Byzantium), re-instatement of a new 2-storey restaurant (with a take-away facility) and a 7-storey flatted development above consisting of 3 x 2 bedroom flats on each level (total of 21 flats).

At Land South Of Riverside Avenue planning permission was granted in March 2007 for the erection of 60 bed hotel with restaurant and formation of car park near Dundee Airport. This is due for completion in 2009.

Mcmanus Galleries is currently closed for the largest renovation project in its 138 year history. and is due for completion later this year.

“Who We Are” will create a Museum for the 21st Century which inspires, educates and entertains; which brings our Heritage and Art alive and secures its conservation; which tells a vivid story of Dundee in the World from earliest geological times to our current living memories; which restores the Victorian and Gothic grandeur of the City’s best loved and most prestigious building; and creates a regional ‘must see’ attraction in the heart of the City.

Planning approval has been granted for the the Tay Hotel building to create a mixed use development consisting of residential flats, an apartment hotel and a bar/restaurant. The bar/restaurant will occupy the ground floor and a mezzanine floor level on the Dock Street elevation. Above this, on the corner of Whitehall Crescent and Dock Street, it is proposed to locate a series of flats grouped around the existing central stair of the building and accessed via the existing main entrance on the corner. Work is likely to begin soon

Summer Developments in Dundee (Part 1)

[Ed's note: Here we have the first of a few posts from Jeff Halkett on the subject of Dundee Developments... if you've been around the city centre + waterfront lately you can't help but notice all the changes taking place. Jeff is a Dundee city centre resident with a keen interest in the Waterfront Project, and has a unique series of images and photos on Flickr]

The foundations have been laid and the real work for Dundee's flagship waterfront development will begin in earnest this summer. The realignment of the Tay Road Bridge ramps is the third and final engineering stage of the project following on from the Western Ring Road alignment and the Dock Street Rail tunnel strengthening project.

This will free up land for the new grid system of roads and the subsequent demolitions of Tayside House Olympia and the Hilton Hotel. Whilst this remains a longstanding objective a number of projects in and around the City Centre have been instigated as a result of the waterfront investment. As a result a number of cranes are peppering the Dundee City skyline. Lets take a look at some of the leisure developments taking place.

The new Holiday Inn Express 103 bedroom hotel on Dock Street will be open for business by August and will include a bar and restaurant at ground level.

Dundee’s newest commercial development — an £8 million casino, restaurant and office complex at West Port — will shortly start appearing above ground on a derelict city centre site. The eight-storey landmark building already has its foundations in place and should become visible to street level passers-by from May 12 onwards.
